Smarter Buildings: The healthy building

This month the publication ‘Program of Requirements for Healthy Offices 2018’ was published. In the introduction to the document, the striking question is: ‘What guarantees that the data tasks are good for health, comfort and productivity? and what is its importance?

It costs human life years
People spend 90% of their time inside, in the office, at home, at school or elsewhere. Nowadays we know that it can take numbers of years of our life’s when we spend our time in an unhealthy indoor climate. The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a method that is defined as the Disability-Adjusted Life Year (DALY). DALYs are usually used to make decisions about health care. DALYs are also used to determine the efficiency of environmental policies in social cost-benefit analyzes. The DALYs can easily be translated into social costs, which consists of a description of the health damage of fine dust. These can be compared with the costs of environmental measures to reduce particulate matter concentrations. The amount of fine dust in buildings is barely measured in the current the situation, but the effect of fresh, clean and healthy buildings is huge.

Insure indoor environment
Wouter Truffino, Holland Proptech: ‘How cool would it be if you left the building at the end of the day more energetic and healthier than when you got there’. The WELL certificate has made its appearance. Insurers are considering insuring organizations and people on the indoor environment theme. It is obvious; healthy buildings are the future.

Measure and adjust
Also in the Smart Building project, the importance of health in buildings is recognized. From the publication PR Healthy Offices 2018, four indoor environmental themes are the most important: air, climate, light and sound.

Sensors to gain insight
A sensor has been developed in order to gain insight on the indoor environment of the pilots within the Smarter Buildings project.  From the theoretical specifications a sensor suitable for market introduction has been developed, the development of which is shown below.

In the past period the Beta version has already been tested in Smarter Buildings. The input obtained from the Beta Version has provided a lot of insight for the Release candidate version (see specifications below). In the coming period, these will be rolled out in the Smarter Buildings pilots in order to gain more insight on the indoor environment of these buildings and to determine how this can be optimized. For more information about this project, please contact Wilfred van der Plas from Simaxx or Jan Mink from VTEC L & S. The Smarter Buildings project receives co-funding from the OP Zuid program (Development Program South Netherlands). OP Zuid is a European subsidy program for the Southern Netherlands and uses funds from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The spearheads of this program are innovation promotion – by promoting cross-overs with and between top clusters – and the transition to a low-carbon economy.
